I recently had the opportunity to chat with a very talented and interesting photographer named Dylan Ransom, who does amazing photography work. I’ve followed his journey through cemeteries, castles and interesting places in England for years. When I asked Dylan about his work it became even more intriguing! This is what he had to say about his journey.
Photography’s always been in the family as my Maternal Granddad was a keen photographer, it was his hobby and he always had a camera in hand, so we always had our photo taken or he’d show us his new camera. I really started to take my photography serious however when I joined Face Book a few years ago, and found it a great medium to share my work. Getting kind feedback for my friends and family, which is humbling, also encourages me to be even better.
There is a haunted Graveyard in my home city of Bath in Somerset, England called All Saints, Weston. As a young kid growing up near by, I’d play in there with my friends and tell urban legends of the place and who would haunt it. Ever since then I’ve had a passion for Graveyards, Cemeteries and Crypts, for all their amazing social history, art work and epitaphs….oh and the nature growing and living among the stones too, they’re mini nature reserves which I love too.
Apart from the mentioned graveyards, I love photographing ancient buildings, castles, churches and monuments. I’m lucky living in England, as there are so many sites close to me that I can visit. The bonus of taking pictures of these old places is occasionally I might capture a ghost, spirit or the like, which is my other big passion, ghosts! I also love snapping coastal, countryside, nature and skies, skies are so dramatic and different every second!
There’s no particular place I am looking to photograph, as where ever I travel, I have my camera and love capturing something unplanned. I’m hoping to expand into portrait photography one day, if I can find any victims. I am currently looking to create a portfolio of my work to get them professionally printed and mounted, then will look to sell some of my best work….watch this space.
Apart from hopefully, one day having a “paying” hobby with my pictures, and who knows where that may lead, I’d like to have an exhibition on day. I’m just planning to keep on taking pictures, where ever I go, and hope to capture something that I like, and if other people like them, that’s even better…….and more ghosts caught on camera too, the more ancient places I see, the better the chances of getting a full apparition ( the holy grail of spirit photography).
Every place I visit genuinely gives me great memories, as captured on digital images, so to pluck out a favorite is difficult…..though I am enjoying my current black and white pictures, whether
What I am hopefully proving is that you do not need expensive photographic equipment to take a good picture (I use a small Nikon Coolpix L28 digital 20.1 megapixel camera or my mobile/cell phone), no fancy lenses or filters! As I’ve mentioned previously, I always carry them with me and snap away, always, which I hope isn’t annoying to others. . Maybe one day I’ll upgrade, but I’m happy with what I’ve got at the moment.
You can find Dylan Ransom’s captivating work on Facebook!
