Friend Remembers Shooting Victim as “Champion for What was Right”
His glasses still are lying on his bed. His shirt and belt are still placed on a chair. As for the man who owned them? He was killed Tuesday at his Escalara Way home in Reno.
Friends identify the man as James Anderson. He lived there with another woman, and Debra Constantino, the other person police say was killed by Mark Constantino Tuesday.
The garage door was open when the friend, who’s identified as ‘Victor’ dropped-off his friend 6:15 a.m. When he heard her scream, Victor went to see what was wrong.
“I saw Jimmy, there, laying dead in the hallway,” said Victor.
He approached his lifeless friend.
“I saw Jimmy,” he said. “And I knew he was shot in the head.”
Victor agreed to talk to Channel 2 News if we protected his identity. Victor wants the memory of Anderson to be the focus, not the person who killed him.
“I don’t give two -expletive-expletive- about Mark,” he said. “Jimmy was the nicest guy you could have ever met.”
Jimmy agreed to let Debra live there with him. She and Mark were in the early stages of getting a divorce.
The two lived in a house on Daybreak Drive. Neighbors say police responded to the home frequently.
“The police had been there many times over the years,” said Kathy Carrico, a neighbor. Carrico moved here 15 years ago, the same time as the Constantinos. She says she heard the couple threatening to kill each other many times in the past, and had even called the police. She wants people to not be afraid to call the authorities if there’s a hunch something is wrong.
“That is a time to call the police because those threats are very real,” she said.
Tuesday, those threats became reality not only for Debbie, but for Anderson too.
As for Victor, he chooses to remember his friend by not how he died, but how he lived.
“The picture of him with food in his hand, that’s what Jimmy would do,” he said. “He’d come over and ask, ‘Hey, are you hungry?’ And he’d feed you.”
That memory will stay with Victor forever. Victor says Anderson was at the wrong place at the wrong time.
“Jimmy was a champion for what was right. And he got killed because of he was doing what he thought was right.”
